Kerala is poised to make history as the first Indian state to eliminate extreme poverty, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan scheduled to make the formal declaration on November 1, 2025, at Thiruvananthapuram’s Central Stadium.
Definition of Extreme Poverty:
Extreme poverty refers to a condition where individuals are unable to meet even the most basic human needs such as adequate food, clean water, shelter, healthcare, and education. According to the World Bank, it is defined as living on less than USD 2.15 per day (in 2017 PPP terms). Eliminating extreme poverty signifies ensuring that no one in the state lives below this threshold of basic subsistence.
