Researchers at IIT Bombay’s Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas, with CSR support from Coal India, have developed a silk production method that does not kill silkworms.

The three-year pilot project, named Jeevodaya, trains silkworms fed on mulberry leaves to deposit silk threads on flat surfaces instead of spinning cocoons, allowing them to complete their natural life cycle.

Unlike conventional silk extraction, which involves boiling cocoons and killing millions of worms, Jeevodaya Silk represents a compassionate, sustainable alternative inspired by the Indian ethical principle “Ma kaschit dukha bhag bhavet”—may no one suffer.
