Security / Defence Modernisation

The Indian Army’s newly raised drone platoons, named Ashni, made their operational debut during a high-altitude drill in the Kameng sector of Arunachal Pradesh. These platoons demonstrated capabilities ranging from surveillance, target acquisition, and precision strikes to multi-domain manoeuvres, signalling a decisive technological shift in warfare. As part of the Army’s broader modernisation drive, every infantry battalion is set to be equipped with a dedicated drone platoon, reflecting the growing centrality of unmanned systems in contemporary conflicts. The trials mark a crucial step toward building a “future-ready force,” with standardisation to follow.
