Economy & Data Governance

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will launch the National Household Income Survey (NHIS) in February 2026, marking India’s first systematic attempt to collect direct household income data across socio-economic groups and regions.

Unlike earlier NSSO consumption-based surveys, the NHIS will provide income-based insights to help measure inequality, regional disparity, and the Gini coefficient. The survey will also strengthen India’s progress toward UN Sustainable Development Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

The data generated will support evidence-based policymaking, especially in areas of taxation, welfare targeting, and poverty alleviation, helping design fairer socio-economic interventions.

(a) Collects data on household expenditure patterns
(b) Focuses on employment and labour market conditions
