Cultural Heritage and Economic Development

The Ministry of Textiles launched the “Haat on Wheels” mobile handloom marketplace during the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations on August 5, 2025, in New Delhi. This innovative initiative aims to promote indigenous handloom products, improving market access for weavers and integrating sustainable fashion into urban retail channels.

The “Haat on Wheels” platform is designed to bridge the gap between urban consumers and authentic handloom products, bringing traditional Indian weaves directly to the city. Implemented in partnership with the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), it showcases 116 types of weaves from different regions of India. The mobile vans travel across Delhi NCR, visiting markets, residential areas, and cultural spaces, emphasizing the “My Handloom, My Pride; My Product, My Pride” theme.

This direct-to-consumer model eliminates the middlemen, thereby enhancing the livelihood security of handloom weavers. It promotes the “Vocal for Local” initiative by connecting weavers with urban buyers, fostering self-reliance, and encouraging sustainable consumption practices. The campaign also serves to increase awareness about the richness of regional handlooms and contributes to the preservation of India’s cultural heritage.
