Science and Technology – Digital Innovation

In September–October 2025, Arattai, a homegrown messaging app developed by Zoho, surged to the top of India’s App Store charts, surpassing platforms like Telegram and Snapchat. The app’s rapid rise was fueled by ministerial endorsements, media attention, and public enthusiasm for Prime Minister Modi’s Swadeshi initiative. On peak days, downloads exceeded five million, reflecting strong public support for indigenous digital platforms.

Promoted as a “free, easy-to-use, secure, safe, and made-in-India” app, Arattai offers features such as text and voice messaging, audio-video calls, group chats, and stories—closely paralleling WhatsApp’s functions but with an emphasis on privacy and an ad-free user experience. The word Arattai means “chat” or “conversation” in Tamil, symbolizing India’s growing confidence in creating world-class digital solutions rooted in local innovation.
