Education & Regulation
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has barred universities and colleges from offering healthcare and allied programmes — including psychology, nutrition, microbiology, and biotechnology — through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) or online mode from the 2025 academic session.
This decision, based on recommendations of the 24th Distance Education Bureau Working Group, stems from concerns regarding the quality of professional training delivered through distance and online modes. Earlier, UGC had already restricted professional programmes such as medicine, engineering, law, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, architecture, agriculture, hotel management, catering technology, and visual arts from online teaching. The latest order extends these restrictions to key healthcare and allied disciplines to ensure rigorous, practice-oriented training.
