Thooyamalli Rice, a traditional sambha-season paddy variety from Tamil Nadu, has recently been in the news following its Geographical Indication (GI) recognition, highlighting India’s agrobiodiversity and heritage grains.
The variety requires 135–140 days for cultivation and is known for its natural aroma, reflected in its name Thooyamalli, meaning “pure jasmine.” It is also called “pearl rice” due to its glossy, lustrous grains.
Beyond aesthetics, Thooyamalli Rice is valued for its nutritional richness and suitability for traditional diets, supporting farmers through premium pricing and protection of indigenous varieties.
