In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court has made it mandatory to conduct a scientific replenishment study before granting approval for riverbed mining.
A replenishment study is a scientific assessment of how much sand, gravel, and other riverbed materials are naturally replenished in a given stretch of a river through erosion, weathering, sediment transport, and deposition. By determining the annual rate of natural replacement, it sets the maximum permissible extraction limit, ensuring mining does not exceed the river’s recovery capacity.
This decision strengthens ecological safeguards against over-extraction and helps maintain the long-term health of river systems.
