South Korea has passed a landmark law banning the use of smartphones and smart devices during school hours starting March 2026. The legislation, supported across political lines, aims to tackle the rising problem of phone addiction among teenagers, with surveys showing that nearly half of them face difficulty in managing screen time.
The law empowers teachers to restrict device use in schools, while providing exemptions for emergencies, disabilities, and educational purposes. By enacting this ban, South Korea joins countries like France, Finland, Italy, the Netherlands, and China, which have already imposed restrictions on phones in schools.
This step reflects a broader global movement to safeguard student well-being, enhance focus in classrooms, and reduce digital dependency, positioning South Korea as a frontrunner in legislating against screen addiction in education.
