To protect GI crops such as Basmati rice from counterfeit seeds, the government has rolled out a two-part strategy. It combines stricter legal safeguards under the amended Seeds Act, 1966, with digital monitoring through the SATHI platform.
Launched in 2023, SATHI began by tracking seed production and processing agencies. By 2025, its scope expanded to dealers and farmers, introducing QR code verification so farmers can confirm authenticity before purchase. This move aims to protect cultivators’ interests and India’s agricultural reputation.
