International Relations / India and its Neighbourhood

In a significant geopolitical development, Russia officially recognized the Taliban-led Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

This makes Russia the first country to formally acknowledge the Taliban regime since its return to power in August 2021.

Background:

The Taliban regained control over Afghanistan in August 2021 after the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces.

Most countries have since maintained informal channels of communication without extending official recognition.

Despite maintaining a Taliban embassy in Moscow, Russia had not formally recognized the regime until now.
