AIIMS-Delhi researchers have recommended a reassessment of India’s ban on electronic nicotine delivery systems, asserting that e-cigarettes containing nicotine have demonstrated relative benefits compared to no treatment or standard care, though accompanied by a risk of bias. These battery-operated devices mimic conventional smoking and are classified as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems. Their sale, storage, and manufacture were prohibited in 2019 through the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, aimed at curbing potential public health risks and youth addiction. The debate now centres on balancing harm-reduction potential against long-term health impacts and regulatory concerns.
