2023 marks the 200th anniversary of the discovery of tea in Assam.Charles Alexander Bruce, the father of tea in Assam and pioneer of commercial tea production blessed Assam with the world’s favourite beverage with deep conviction. This European who made Assam his home never went back to Scotland.He now gently rests under the shades of the eucalyptus trees in Pratapgarh Tea Estate in Biswanath of Sonitpur district.
Charles Alexander Bruce died on April 23, 1871 and was buried in Tezpur. Later, his remains were shifted after 119 years of his death. Born on 11 January 1793, Alexander Bruce served as a naval officer before he was appointed as the Superintendent of the Tea Board in 1835. And then started the glorious journey of Assam tea
The Pratapgarh Tea Estate in Biswanath is now the last resort for the father of the Assam tea industry.
