Gauhati High Court adjourned a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking the declaration of an Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) around Kaziranga National Park in Assam.

Some key features of Eco-Sensitive Zones:

Buffer Zone Protection: ESZs act as a transitional zone between protected areas and human habitats, preventing activities that may harm biodiversity.

Variable Range: The range of an ESZ varies based on ecological significance and is usually set within a radius of 10 km from the protected area boundary. However, it can be customized according to the sensitivity of the ecosystem and may extend beyond or within the 10 km radius.

Permissible and Regulated Activities: ESZs classify activities as permitted, regulated, or prohibited, including:

Permissible Activities: Activities like agriculture, horticulture, rainwater harvesting, and organic farming are typically allowed.

Regulated Activities: Developmental activities, such as construction, tourism, and eco-friendly infrastructure projects, are subject to strict regulation and may require prior environmental clearances.

Prohibited Activities: Activities like commercial mining, setting up polluting industries, and large-scale deforestation are prohibited to protect the ecosystem.
