Science and Technology
NASA has successfully launched the TRACERS mission, deploying twin satellites to explore how Earth’s magnetic field defends the planet from space weather effects. The mission focuses on studying magnetic reconnection — a process that drives phenomena like auroras and satellite disruptions. Operating in low Earth orbit, TRACERS will repeatedly pass through polar cusps, where solar wind meets Earth’s magnetosphere.
Launched from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, the mission also deployed three additional satellites — Athena EPIC, PExT, and REAL — to test new technologies and gather scientific data. TRACERS has now entered a four-week commissioning phase before beginning its full-scale scientific observations.
