NSCN-IM leader Thuingaleng Muivah recently visited his birthplace, Somdal village, in the Tangkhul Naga-dominated Ukhrul district of Manipur, located about 25 km from the district headquarters.
The Indo-Naga peace process began with the ceasefire agreement between the Centre and the NSCN-IM on August 1, 1997, marking the start of political negotiations. The dialogue rests on three key principles — it must be unconditional, held at the highest level, and conducted in a third country.
Over 70 rounds of talks led to the signing of the Framework Agreement in 2015. However, the talks remain unresolved due to NSCN-IM’s continued demand for a separate Naga flag and constitution, which the Centre has not accepted.
In parallel, the Government of India also initiated negotiations with the Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC-NNPGs), a coalition of seven Naga organisations, leading to the signing of the Agreed Position in 2017
