Indian-origin entrepreneur Eliyahu Bezalel, celebrated globally for his agricultural innovations, has passed away. Beginning his life as a shepherd in Israel, he rose to become an award-winning agriculturist and recipient of the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman. Bezalel played a key role in transforming the Negev desert into fertile farmland, earning the best exporter award from former Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol in 1964.
Beyond his achievements in Israel, Bezalel generously shared his horticulture expertise with Indian farmers, many of whom have attempted to replicate his desert-farming techniques in recent years. His contributions were further recognised when the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) honoured him with the prestigious Kaplan Prize in 1994.
