King Lalitaditya Muktapida was one of the most illustrious rulers of the Karkota dynasty of Kashmir, who reigned during the 8th century
He is believed to have defeated the mighty Yashovarman of Kannauj, the ruler of eastern India at the time.
He built magnificent temples and structures, most notably the Martand Sun Temple in Kashmir. This temple, a masterpiece of Kashmiri architecture, reflects the influence of Central Asian, Greek, and Indian styles.
Much of what we know about Lalitaditya comes from the Rajatarangini, a historical chronicle written by Kalhana in the 12th century. Kalhana presents Lalitaditya as a remarkable ruler whose empire-building and patronage of culture were unparalleled in Kashmir’s history.
