Polity & Judiciary
Justice Revati Mohite Dere has taken oath as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court, becoming the first woman to head the court since its establishment. Her appointment is symbolically significant in Meghalaya, a matrilineal society, and reflects the gradual but important expansion of gender representation in India’s higher judiciary. The development also highlights ongoing efforts to improve diversity, inclusiveness and institutional credibility within constitutional courts, especially in the Northeast, where judicial institutions play a crucial role in federal balance and rights protection.
APSC relevance: constitutional offices, higher judiciary, judicial appointments, gender representation in governance, Northeast-specific polity developments.
