First-ever detection of the fungus Neoscirrhia matteucciicola in India has been recorded in Meghalaya’s ginger fields, posing a potential threat to this high-value crop known for its rich gingerol content. Alongside it, another pathogen, Poitrasia circinans, has also been identified affecting ginger leaves.
The discovery, made by researchers from North-Eastern Hill University during 2024 field surveys, highlights emerging plant disease risks. It underscores the need for timely scientific intervention to safeguard farmers’ livelihoods and protect the region’s agricultural economy.
