The Meghalaya Governor has appointed Justice (Retd.) R. S. Chauhan to head a judicial inquiry into the Thangsko tragedy under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952. The Commission will investigate the circumstances leading to the incident on February 5 and submit a fact-finding report within six months.

The inquiry will also examine the underlying causes of illegal coal mining in the State and recommend corrective measures, including administrative and institutional reforms. It will assess whether any policy relaxation regarding traditional rat-hole mining should be sought from the Centre.
