Uma Kanjilal has been appointed as the first woman Vice-Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), breaking a four-decade-long precedent at the premier open university.

With a long academic career beginning in 2003 as a professor of Library and Information Science, she has become a nationally recognised expert in the fields of e-learning, ICT in libraries, digital libraries, and multimedia courseware development.

She currently serves as the National Coordinator for SWAYAM and SWAYAM PRABHA — key digital education platforms under the Ministry of Education — where she has played a leading role in expanding digital access to quality learning across the country.

Her appointment reflects a broader shift towards inclusive leadership in higher education and underscores IGNOU’s commitment to innovation and accessibility in distance learning.
