Culture / Religion & Ecology

Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to visit the Tripura Sundari Temple at Udaipur in Tripura’s Gomati district on January 15. The shrine is one of the most prominent Shakti Peethas in the Northeast and records the second-highest footfall in the region after Assam’s Kamakhya Temple.

The temple is also known as a Kurmapitha, as its premises resemble a tortoise (kurma). Increased ecological awareness has led to the revival of the adjacent Kalyan Sagar pond, which now supports a thriving population of rare bostami turtles revered as sacred, reflecting a close link between religious tradition and ecosystem conservation.
