Internal Security and Defence
India has expedited the ₹20,000 crore procurement of 87 Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drones from domestic manufacturers as part of efforts to bolster border surveillance and intelligence capabilities. These drones, operating at altitudes up to around 35,000 feet, can remain airborne for over 30 hours and are instrumental in intelligence gathering, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR), and even limited strike roles.
The acquisition is part of the broader ‘Make in India’ push in the defence sector. Until now, such drones were primarily sourced from Israel, but this move signals a strategic shift towards indigenous capabilities in unmanned systems. The deployment of these drones will significantly enhance the monitoring of sensitive borders and aid in rapid threat detection and response.
