Environment and Ecology
The Sustainable Aquaculture in Mangrove Ecosystems (SAIME) model, developed by the Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) in the Sundarbans of West Bengal, has received Global Technical Recognition from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
This innovative, community-driven model integrates mangrove conservation with aquaculture livelihoods. Farmers maintain 5–30% of pond areas under mangrove cover, allowing coexistence of mangrove forests with fish and shrimp cultivation.
Mangrove litter naturally nourishes Black Tiger Shrimp (Penaeus monodon), reducing chemical input dependence and production costs. By promoting climate-resilient aquaculture, the SAIME model enhances local incomes while safeguarding coastal ecosystems from erosion and rising sea levels
