India has added Gokul Jalashay and Udaipur Jheel in Bihar to the list of Ramsar sites, raising the national tally to 93 wetlands of international importance. With this addition, India has further consolidated its position as the leading country in Asia for Ramsar recognition.
Globally, India now stands third in the world, after the United Kingdom with 176 sites and Mexico with 144. This achievement highlights India’s growing commitment to wetland conservation and its recognition of wetlands as vital ecosystems for biodiversity, climate resilience, and community livelihoods.
