Environment & Ecology
The Endangered Species Recovery Plans (ESRP) are targeted conservation initiatives in India focused on the protection and revival of critically endangered and threatened species.
Key Features:
Framework: Operates under the Integrated Development of Wildlife Habitats (IDWH), a Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).
Implementing Agency: Wildlife Institute of India (WII), which provides scientific inputs and monitoring support.
Objective: To ensure the long-term survival of select species through habitat management, captive breeding, community involvement, and coordinated conservation strategies.
Coverage: As of now, 24 species have been included, including recent additions like the Gharial and Sloth Bear.
Notable Species Under ESRP:
Snow Leopard
Asiatic Lion
Great Indian Bustard
Dugong
Northeast’s Wild Water Buffalo
Gharial
Sloth Bear
Analytical Insight:
The ESRP exemplifies species-specific conservation planning, complementing India’s broader biodiversity commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and aligning with SDG Goal 15 (Life on Land).
Its success depends on community participation, scientific research, and inter-state cooperation, especially for wide-ranging species like carnivores and migratory birds.
