Israel achieved a significant space milestone in 2025 with the launch of Dror-1, its first fully government-funded and domestically built communications satellite. The satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
Dror-1 is a geostationary satellite, positioned about 36,000 km above the Earth’s equator, enabling continuous coverage over Israel and nearby regions. Weighing around 4.5 tonnes and spanning 17.8 metres, it is engineered for a 15-year mission, expected to meet Israel’s communication needs until the late 2030s.
The project began in 2018, with an estimated cost of Rs 1,670 crore, and represents a strategic leap in Israel’s space technology and communication infrastructure.
