Environment and Biodiversity

India and other Central Asian nations have endorsed a six-year transboundary conservation plan under the Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI) to protect 17 migratory mammal species.

CAMI, launched in 2014 during COP11 of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) and updated at COP13 in Gandhinagar (2020), serves as a collaborative framework to safeguard migratory and nomadic mammals across Central Asia’s vast steppe, desert, and mountain ecosystems.

The new plan aims to preserve migratory connectivity, curb habitat fragmentation, poaching, and climate threats, and strengthen cross-border cooperation for shared species conservation.
