Assam government has temporarily halted granting of no-objection certificates (NOCs) for sale of land between individuals belonging to different religions. In a notification, the Assam government said that the decision was taken to prevent “conflict on communal lines” ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

The order, effective for three months, was issued on March 7 by the Revenue and Disaster Management (Registration) Department.

However, if the District Commissioner is of the view that grant of such an NOC [no objection certificate] is absolutely necessary for attending circumstances and will not lead to any breach of law and order, the same may be issued with prior concurrence of Inspector-General of Registration, Assam

This notification comes on the heels of the Assam government’s implementation of the third phase of ‘Mission Basundhara’, which aims to convert government-owned land into ‘myadi patta,’ granting ownership rights to applicants from an indigenous community.
