Environment / Agriculture / Water Management

Definition:
Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) is a water management technique in which excess surface water (such as rainwater or treated water) is intentionally recharged into an underground aquifer during times of water surplus, and recovered for use during periods of water scarcity. It is a sustainable method for managing groundwater resources, particularly in regions prone to seasonal variability.

Nagaland University Findings:

The university’s research highlighted that long-term water management strategies like ASR can be effective only when the local farming community is actively involved.

Success of ASR is not just technical, but a social process requiring:

Long-term engagement of stakeholders

Sustained financial support

Peer-led and community-based governance models

Emphasized that community ownership and trust-building are essential for the durability of such initiatives in Northeast India.
