What is Chlorpyrifos?
- Organophosphate insecticide, acaricide, and miticide.
- Chemical Formula: C₉H₁₁Cl₃NO₃PS.
- Used on crops: cotton, paddy, wheat, soy, maize.
Mode of Action
- Neurotoxic: Inhibits acetylcholinesterase enzyme essential for nerve function.
Health Impacts
- Reduced IQ, developmental delays, birth defects, memory loss.
- Acute exposure: Can cause convulsions, respiratory failure, or death.
Environmental Concerns
- Persistent and bioaccumulative in nature.
- Can travel long distances, even to polar regions.
- Toxic to pollinators and aquatic life, disrupting food chains and biodiversity.
Global Status
- Banned in over 40 countries.
- Not yet listed under Rotterdam or Stockholm Conventions.
- Global push ongoing for its inclusion under BRS conventions.
