Indian Polity & Governance
The All India Speakers’ Conference 2025 was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the Delhi Assembly. Organized as a two-day event, it commemorates the 100th anniversary of Vitthalbhai Patel’s election as the first Indian Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly in 1925.
Vitthalbhai Patel (1873–1933), elder brother of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, was a pioneering nationalist leader. Educated in law in England, he returned to India and played an active role in both legal practice and the political struggle for independence. His election as the first Indian Speaker marked a turning point in India’s legislative history, reflecting the growing assertion of Indian leadership within colonial institutions. As Speaker, he introduced a culture of parliamentary autonomy and impartiality, shaping conventions that continue to guide legislative practices today.
