Environment & Biodiversity

The vaquita is the world’s most endangered marine mammal, with only about 10 individuals left. It is the smallest porpoise, found only in the northern Gulf of California, Mexico.

Its survival is threatened mainly by bycatch in gillnets, especially from illegal totoaba fishing. Despite conservation measures, weak enforcement has worsened its decline.

The vaquita’s crisis underscores the urgent need for strict fishing bans, global cooperation, and community-led conservation to prevent extinction.
