Influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, Maulana Md Tayyebulla plunged headlong into the freedom movement, giving up his lucrative legal profession and spending many years behind bars
for freeing the country from the yoke of British imperialism.
He is particularly remembered for his role during the Non-cooperation Movement, Civil Disobedience Movement, the Individual Satyagraha and the Quit India Movement (1921-1942) where he met many prominent freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru and Sarojini Naidu.
During the grouping game plan of the British regime for annexing Assam with Pakistan at the behest of the Muslim League, Tayyebulla as president of the Indian National Congress, Assam (1940 to 1948), opposed tooth and nail along with leaders like Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi and Tarun Ram Phookan to thwart its nefarious design
While he was a minister in the Bordoloi government, Tayyebulla adopted a slew of measures for total prohibition of opium and also induced reforms in jail administration.
A staunch nationalist, Tayyebulla was honoured to hoist the national flag for the first time at the historic Judge’s Field in Guwahati.
