Project Suncatcher is a concept and research initiative by Google Research to deploy AI data centres in low-Earth orbit, powered continuously by solar energy. The idea is to run energy-intensive AI workloads using uninterrupted space-based solar power.
The project aims to reduce AI’s carbon and energy footprint while decoupling future compute expansion from Earth-based power grids, land constraints and water-intensive cooling systems.
