In preparation for the upcoming single-phase Assembly elections, Assam Police is planning preventive arrests across the state to maintain law and order and ensure peaceful polling. Such measures aim to deter potential disruptions during the electoral process.

Preventive arrest is governed by Section 151 of the CrPC (now Section 170 of the BNSS), allowing police to detain individuals without a warrant to prevent cognizable offences. Constitutional safeguards under Article 22 (3–7) provide protections, including review mechanisms in cases of preventive detention.

APSC Relevance: Important for polity, criminal procedure laws and election-related law and order measures.
