Russia’s Gazprom has signed an agreement with China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) for the construction of the Power of Siberia 2 pipeline. The project is a proposed natural gas corridor linking western Siberia to China through Mongolia, covering approximately 6,700 km. It represents an expansion of the Power of Siberia 1 pipeline, which has been operational since 2019.
The pipeline is strategically important for Russia as it seeks to compensate for revenue losses from European gas exports following EU sanctions and the disruption caused by the Ukraine war. For China, it strengthens long-term energy security by diversifying gas imports. The initiative highlights a deepening Russia–China partnership in energy cooperation, while simultaneously underlining Moscow’s pivot towards Asian markets to reduce reliance on the West.
