Scientists have identified two new freshwater fish species — Glyptothorax sentimereni and Oreichthys elianae. The species were named after the son and daughter of the late Nagaland-based assistant professor Limakum, who had closely collaborated with the researchers. Naming the species after his children fulfilled one of his final wishes and serves as a tribute to his scientific contribution.
One of the species, Glyptothorax sentimereni, was discovered in the rocky stretches of the Dikhu River. The discovery highlights the rich yet understudied freshwater biodiversity of Northeast India.
APSC Relevance: Important for biodiversity studies and freshwater ecosystem research in Northeast India.
