In August 2025, Myanmar’s military regime designated the Karen National Union (KNU) a terrorist group, criminalising nearly all associations with it. The KNU, representing the Karen minority in southeast Myanmar, has fought for autonomy since 1948. Although it signed a ceasefire in 2015, the group resumed armed resistance after the 2021 coup. Its armed wing, the Karen National Liberation Army, has trained urban activists and calls for federal democracy and international mediation. The move reflects the junta’s tightening control amid civil war and prolonged instability.
