Education & Child Rights
The Maharashtra government has ordered a complete ban on physical and mental punishment in schools, reinforcing the Right to Education Act, 2009, with special emphasis on Section 17, which prohibits corporal punishment and mental harassment of children.
The resolution also extends the ban to verbal abuse, taunting, offensive language, and any conduct that may cause psychological distress or feelings of inferiority among students, strengthening child-centric and rights-based schooling.
Lesson for Assam: Assam can adopt a similar zero-tolerance framework, strengthen school-level monitoring, sensitise teachers on child psychology, and institutionalise grievance redressal mechanisms to ensure safe, inclusive, and dignity-based education.
APSC relevance: Important for child rights, RTE Act provisions, education governance, and best practices for school safety.
