Uttarakhand, which became the first state to implement a civil code, makes it mandatory for live-in partners to register themselves with the district registrar or face a jail term of up to six months.

Live-in couples need to provide proof of residency as well as their age. In case one or both the partners are below 21 years old, their parents will be informed

The rules also make it mandatory for landlords to verify the registration certificates of their tenants before signing rent agreements. Failure to do so will result in landlords having to cough up fines of up to Rs 20,000.

Live-in couples also have to submit proof of their previous relationship status. For divorcees, a final decree of divorce and proof of dissolution of marriage are required. A final decree of nullity of marriage is required to be submitted if their marriage was annulled.

If one entering into a live-in relationship is a widow or widower, then the death certificate of the spouse has to be submitted. A death certificate also has to be given to the registrar if the individual’s previous live-in partner has passed away.
