He was nominated for the first Nobel Prize in 1901 and lost to Sully Prudhomme, despite the majority of audiences believing that Tolstoy should have won the award. He was passed over again the following year in 1902 and when he was nominated again in 1905, he wrote a letter the Finnish translator of his books, Arvid Jarnefelt, asking him to discretely inform the Nobel committee via the translation of his letter to no longer consider Tolstoy for the honour
