Education & Educational Reforms
The semicircular classroom design being implemented in Kerala is a student-centric innovation aimed at promoting inclusivity and interactive learning. In this layout, students sit in an arc, allowing everyone to face the teacher positioned at the center, which enhances eye contact and engagement.
Unlike traditional classroom structures that create a hierarchy between front-benchers and back-benchers, this design eliminates positional disadvantages, encouraging equal participation among all students.
The concept was first introduced under the District Primary Education Programme (DPEP) in 1994 but faded over time. Its revival is largely driven by public support and educationists, reflecting a growing push towards more democratic and participatory learning environments in public schooling.
