Senior cleric Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been designated as the jurist member of Iran’s temporary leadership council, entrusted with performing the responsibilities of the Supreme Leader during the transitional phase following the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran’s constitutional framework provides for a collective interim authority to ensure continuity of governance until a new Supreme Leader is formally selected.
According to the constitutional arrangement, the interim leadership council consists of the President, the Chief Justice and a cleric nominated from the Guardian Council. This collective body exercises supervisory and leadership functions, maintaining political stability while the Assembly of Experts undertakes the process of choosing the next Supreme Leader.
APSC Relevance: Important for International Relations and comparative political systems, especially questions on Iran’s constitutional structure and leadership transition mechanisms.
