The Government of India has extended the River Basin Management (RBM) Scheme for 2026–31 with an outlay of ₹2,183 crore, focusing on integrated water resource management. It prioritises the Northeast and Indus Basin, addressing water security in sensitive border regions.

The scheme includes flood and erosion control measures such as protection of Majuli and raised platforms in vulnerable areas. It also supports data-driven management of transboundary rivers like the Indus and Brahmaputra, strengthening disaster resilience and water diplomacy.
