The Union Budget 2026–27 introduces a crop-specific, regionally differentiated strategy to promote high-value crops in coastal, Northeast and Himalayan regions. Agarwood has emerged as a key focus due to its high commercial value and export potential.

India has around 150 million agarwood trees, with nearly 90% in the Northeast, especially Assam and Tripura. Leveraging the global oud market, the strategy aims at a ₹2,000 crore turnover through sustainable cultivation and CITES-compliant exports, boosting regional economy and livelihoods.
