Bhutan’s Gelephu International Airport, part of the visionary Mindfulness City initiative, merges sustainability with strategic development. The 3,000-metre runway and eco-conscious terminal—designed with passive airflow, glulam timber, and photovoltaic systems—highlight environmental responsibility and cultural rootedness.

Preserving the Paitha River beneath the runway and using native ecosystems in design reflect Bhutan’s harmony with nature. Economically, the project is expected to generate employment, improve export capacity, and increase passenger handling up to 5.5 million. Internationally, it signals Bhutan’s intent to enhance regional connectivity while maintaining its core values of mindfulness and self-reliance.
