Polity of Assam

After much anticipation, the District Council Court (DCC) at Karbi Anglong was finally inaugurated by the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang

Issues such as adultery, theft, marriage laws, and property will be heard in the court, so justice will now be even more accessible for tribal communities.

Plans have been also finalized to constitute a village police force for KAAC, which has also been given its nod by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The DCC was constituted under Paragraph 4 of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution and the Mikir Hills Autonomous District Administration of Justice Rule, 1954. The court will judge civil cases, including marriage laws, land disputes, and title suits, with criminal cases being subject to the Governor’s approval for trials with sentences of more than five years.
